Warthog Facts

Warthogs are plump, hooved animals with large nostrils at the end of the snout. They have little fur, except for a mane that goes down the spine to the middle of the backand their tails also end with a tuft of hair. They have large teeth or tusks.

Despite their dreaded appearance, warthogs prefer staying away from danger. They can run at a speed of almost 33 miles per hour, and have a tendency to run backwards into burrows to escape predators. The backward running ensures that predators will face its deadly tusks if they follow it.

Warthogs have a diet that consists mainly of grass, fruit, berries, roots and insects but warthogs are also known to occasionally eat small mammals, birds and reptiles. The diet of the warthog however, depends on the season and what is growing and therefore available for the warthog to eat.

Warthogs are members of the pig family. Their curved tusks are used to dig up roots and can grow into dangerous weapons. They kneel on their front knees to feed because they have short necks and relativity long legs. They have adapted by developing special kneepads.

Warthogs are not very tall animals and can struggle to follow each other through long grass when they are running. So the way they solved this problem is when they run their tails stick straight up with a tuff of black hair on the tail which acts as a sort of flag pole for the others to follow.
