Giant Panda Facts

Giant pandas (often referred to as simply “pandas”) are black and white bears and in the wild, they are found in thick bamboo forests, high up in the mountains of central China.

They are omnivores and while they occasionally eat small animals and fish their main diet, 99%, is made up of bamboo and they eat up to 12 hours a day and consume 12kg of it!

The scientific name is Ailuropoda Melanoleuca, which means “black and white cat-foot”.

Giant pandas grow to between 1.2m and 1.5m, and weigh between 75kg and 135kg. Scientists aren’t sure how long pandas live in the wild, but in captivity they live to be around 30 years old.

Baby pandas are tiny when they are born, about the size of a pencil, 15cm and they are pink with no fur and also blind. Their eyes open after 6-8 weeks.
