The Sensational Sinatra Story
As the finale to Howden's Vintage Day on Saturday 11th May, The Northern Showtime Orchestra’s latest show The Sensational Sinatra Story features Richard Adams, a singer more used to singing his own self-penned songs as an acoustic artist, having sung for eleven years in a duo popular in folk and acoustic circles – Stony. Richard has effortlessly crossed over to big band swing and his delivery of the songs made popular by Sinatra has received critical acclaim wherever the show has been performed. “I’ve been a fan and a student of Sinatra’s singing since I was a teenager, and trying to retrace the great man’s life in this show is an amazing and daunting experience,” says Richard.
The Northern Showtime Orchestra is an eight-piece ensemble with it a difference. Uniquely, it also tells the stories behind the music, combining commentary, slides and presentations alongside faithful re-creations of arrangements which changed the face of music. So, how does Richard feel about walking in the footsteps of his hero? “Sinatra is arguably the greatest voice of the 20th Century so this is a huge challenge for any singer. His sense of swing, timing and phrasing are extraordinary. He used to practice these skills whilst holding his breath underwater in the swimming pool; stretching his lung capacity and seeing how long he could hold a phrase – an incredible perfectionist. Richard’s performance with Northern Showtime is not about trying to be Frank or being a tribute act. This band is made up of top musicians who have all played in leading orchestras or bands nationally and internationally. This is about lovingly re-telling an amazing story and lovingly learning from the master,” says Adams.
Trombonist Tony Turner created the orchestra in 2012. Three members of the Northern Showtime Orchestra also perform locally with the Scarborough Spa Orchestra, Kathy Seabrook (flute and saxophone), Andy Crofts (drums), and Graham Quilter (clarinet and saxophone). Nigel Blenkiron (trumpet), Bob Walker (bass) and Dave Clegg (piano) complete the lineup.
